see. people wading through waist-deep water there. a place in south texas got 16.75 inches. that was harlingen. now i want to show you what is happening as we speak along i-64 near richmond. it was closed for a while because of flash flooding, people being rescued from cars there. flash flooding heading just south and west of washington, d.c. this morning. this was the dramatic scene in mcallen, texas, thursday. people wading through waist-deep water. cars swallowed by flooding. and rescuers searching by helicopter, boat, and even bus. the torrential downpours from a persistent tropical wave swamping cities and dozens of vehicles littering roadways. and the governor issuing a disaster declaration. some counties got more than 16 inches of rain. summer storms impacting folks across the nation. nearly 150 campers trapped by flooding in montana. this tornado whipping across the land in idaho. and flash floods turning deadly

in pennsylvania. >> we were like, get out, get out. everybody leave. >> reporter: one woman killed. dozens of others rescued around pittsburgh. the flash flood watch is not just in northern virginia but back through central west virginia, southeastern ohio and another pocket of severe storms and heavy rain that could happen in the southeast. that includes parts of mississippi, alabama, and even georgia. more on that soon. but michael, back to you. >> hopefully some relief soon. david? >> it could be a rocky day ahead. we turn now to those new images overnight. some of the first of the parents and children reuniting after being separated at the border. but there's still so many at more than a dozen shelters around the country, including babies and young children who don't even know their parents' numbers obviously. and this mother together with her son. a trump administration official says hundreds of families have been reunited since may. there are still questions about what will happen to those still separated. the announcement coming on the heels of first lady melania

trump's surprise visit to a shelter for immigrant children in texas. let's get right to jonathan karl tracking the latest. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, david. the white house says it was 100% the first lady's idea to make a surprise visit to the border to see firsthand the children who have been separated from their families. but two days after the president said he was ending the family separation, there is more confusion than answers about what will happen to the children. during her surprise visit to the mexican border, the first lady said she was looking for answers. >> i'd also like to ask you how i can help to these children to reunite them with their families as quickly as possible. >> reporter: but for most of the children taken away from their parents because of president trump's zero tolerance policy, it is unclear this morning how or when they'll be reunited with their families. going forward, at least for the next 20 days, families caught crossing the board illegally are to be detained together while

the adults await court hearings. but where will they be held? the pentagon says it is looking into options for housing some 20,000 unaccompanied children in military facilities near the border. but not for the families. the first lady and first daughter ivanka trump had urged the president to end his policy of separating children from their parents. in her two hours on the ground in texas, the first lady asked about the mental health of the children. >> so, when the children come here what kind of stage, you know, physical and mental stage they come here? >> usually when they get here they're very distraught. when they see the environment, see the other kids, see the yard, they start relaxing. >> reporter: the crisis was triggered by the president's own policy. but in a meeting with his cabinet, he falsely put the blame on the democrats. >> the democrats are causing tremendous damage and destruction and lives by not doing something about this and they know that. >> reporter: while the first

lady sent a message of compassion on her trip to texas, she made a curious fashion statement, wearing a jacket as she left washington and when she returned that said, i really don't care, do u? her spokeswoman said, it's a jacket. there was no hidden message. that statement was soon contradicted by the president in a tweet. he said the message written in big letters across her back was actually aimed at the, quote, fake news media. melania has learned how dishonest they are and she truly no longer cares. we reached out to the first lady's spokesperson to ask if in fact the president was correct and that's what she meant by wearing that jacket. no answer from the first lady's spokes person. but david, there is absolutely nothing to say that what the president said about that is actually the case. >> yeah, a lot of people focused on those words but we're going to remain focused on the children and these families. and jon, i wanted to ask you agent congress. still struggling to act on immigration?

where does that stand? >> reporter: going know where nowhere fast, david. the house of representatives voted down a hard-line immigration bill. they were supposed to vote on a more moderate bill and will try it again next week. the bottom line is, there is no sign of any bipartisan agreement on any aspect of this immigration issue. >> i know you'll track it through the day. we'll see you on "world news" tonight, jon. thanks so much. robin? >> as you said, there are still several hundred more children separated from their parents at the border and still no clear answer on when or how they will be reunited. gio benitez is still in el paso. you learned that little girl we heard crying for her aunt, we've heard more about her? >> reporter: yeah, robin. good morning, she and her mother are now hoping to be reunited soon. but, you know, we're also learning that so many of these children aren't even by the border anymore. they've been sent to shelters

all across this country. and some have been reunited. this morning, some of those children separated at the border reunited with their families. a senior white house official telling the associate press around 500 children have been reunited since may. unclear how many are still being detained with their relatives and whether president trump's executive order had an impact on their status. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: this, as we're learning more about that clear voice captured in that audio recording of children's cries. >> mommy! >> reporter: that audio first obtained by propublica. 6-year-old jimena. she's from el salvador. shown here with her mother, she was heard begging a supervisor to call her aunt after she and her mom were separated. she has the number memorized. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: on wednesday propublica was there. as little jimena called her aunt again.

it was from inside a detention center. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: she told her aunt and cousin she wants to take a hot bath when she's out of the detention center. it's been a week since they crossed the border. propublica reporting she's now in a facility in phoenix 1200 miles from her mother who it says is being kept in port isabel, texas. [ speaking foreign language ] >> no. >> the fact that jimena was able to memorize this phone number turned out to be a really lucky thing for her. many of the kids who come to this country who are her age or below, you know, don't know things like phone numbers. >> reporter: her aunt was filmed in silhouette because she's afraid that her speaking to the press will affect her and her daughter's asylum case. her aunt says that during their

first phone call, the little girl was crying, screaming, and begging. propublica reporting that authorities told her mother they'd be reunited soon. she's one of the few who could track down her family on her own but for so many of these children and parents, this road to the reunion is just so unclear. robin. >> as we heard in your report, many of these children are too young to speak or much less memorize a phone number, so what happens with them? >> reporter: that's what these advocates are really worried about here. if this paperwork is not complete, if the paperwork is unclear, even though they hope to find these families, to reunite these families, they really do fear that they'll never see their family again. robin. >> so heartbreaking. >> scary thought right there. thank you. now to pittsburgh and new protests overnight after that deadly police shooting of antwon rose, an unarmed 17-year-old who

was running from a car. abc's kenneth moton is in east pittsburgh with the latest. we're learning that car was part of a ride-sharing service. >> reporter: that's right, michael. a jitney service. for those unfamiliarit's like a taxi. but county police investigators won't say if antwon rose was a customer or if he knew the driver. here near the scene protestors gathered and marched for miles and demanded justice. protesters in the streets tripling this area in and around east pittsburgh. this interstate shut down snarling traffic. demonstrators marching, determined to bring attention to the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old antwon rose. >> it's a clear assassination to me. explain to me how you're in fear of a person running. >> reporter: investigators say an officer, michael rossfeld, opened fire during a traffic

stop as antwon and a second passenger ran away on foot. cell phone video capturing the incident. antwon was shot three times. >> things happen in realtime but there's no excuse for an officer to shoot someone in the back in the setting that we see in the video that everyone in america has seen by now. >> reporter: investigators say the car antwon was in was under suspicion, possibly connected to a nearby shooting. but abc news learned the driver who was questioned and released after antwon was shot was a driver for hire. police say two guns were found inside the car. they've released little to no details about the driver or the second passenger who got away. >> i'm just tired of it. and something has got to be done. something has got to be done. >> reporter: antwon's mother released a poem she said he wrote two years ago. it was read aloud during a large protest in downtown pittsburgh. >> i see mothers bury their sons. i want my mom to never feel that pain. >> reporter: officer rosfeld spoke to our local abc affiliate, wtae, confirming he

was sworn in the night of the shooting. he's been on the job for three weeks and law enforcement for several years. he wouldn't talk about the shooting but said he's trying to deal with what happened. david? >> we turn to a supreme court rielg that means you could spend more when you shop online. abc's chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis has all the details. this is a big deal. >> it is a big deal and it means states can now force online retailers to charge a sales tax, so you will end up paying more when you shop online. take a look at this sofa for example on wayfair.com. if you went on prior to the ruling and had it shipped you would pay $575. now, south dakota can force wayfair to collect a 4.5% sales tax meaning you will pay more for that couch. >> 75 bucks, that's a lot more. >> it means a lot to people.

its prey, the body of the hiker, and when the search party got too close, the bear attacked. this morning, a community on high alert after a black bear may have killed a man and attacked another. police are searching in the sky and on foot. >> the bear is still out there. we had the department stay out most of the night on site waiting for the bear to return. >> reporter: 44-year-old michael soltis went hiking near a park on monday. family members worried when he didn't return. >> we were searching for my cousin. we were going in parties of three. >> reporter: a group including his cousin wendy went into the park searching for michael when a brown bear attacked, lunging toward the group. injuring a man. >> we were going down the trail and you could hear noise to the left and i look and this brown bear comes lunging out. >> reporter: police arriving to the scene, searching the area when they made the gruesome discovery finding michael's body. park officials believe the bear was protecting its prey.

surprise visit to texas, also causing some controversy for the words that she had on the back of her jacket and what they may mean. and take a look at this. one man's daring escape caught on camera. he jumps from boat to boat escaping a cruise ship as it crashes through boston harbor. the coast guard is investigating after the ship carrying 320 students struck those moored boats. very scary moment there. >> first this half hour we get to new details about "roseanne" without roseanne. the spin-off announced overnight starring the same cast, of course, with roseanne barr and will be called "the conners" and gets the green light after "roseanne" was pulled from the air following her racist tweets and linsey davis has more. >> reporter: many were shocked when abc announced the cancellation of "roseanne," number one show of the tv season

and the internet is abuzz many questioning if it's possible for the show to succeed without its namesake. we'll soon find out. this morning the conner family is on its way back to prime time yet again. >> i trusted you. >> reporter: only this time without their controversial matriarch or her trademark laugh. the abc show for now dubbed "the conners" will carry on the story of the iconic working class family and its struggles but its original namesake and creator, roseanne barr, will have no financial or creative involvement in the new show after a racist tweet from barr last month led to the top rated series' abrupt cancellation. barr played a key role in the show without her saying she was focused on saving the jobs and characters she endangered. i regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from "roseanne." i agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew be saved and i wish the best for everyone involved. the remaining cast members including john goodman, laurie

metcalf, sarah gilbert, lecy goranson and michael fishman said in part, it's clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts but in the hearts and homes of our audience adding they are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter. online a lot of opinions both for and against the show. one posted a comment saying hard pass on the "the conners." the show is nothing without r s roseanne. and others say they will certainly watch. one suggestion that kept coming up the focus should be on sarah gilbert's character darlene and single mothers. >> we'll see. thanks so much. i want to get to larry hackett, managing part after 10ten media. good to have you back with us this week. we were just talking about this whether it's been done before -- we know it has been done but without the main character. does it succeed? >> she looms over this show like nobody else has. shelley long left "cheers," and david caruso left "nypd blue."

this is different. i believe why people watch, they see themselves in these characters and see the family dynamic and recognize something they want to see and follow. i think with the writers here, we know months ahead of time they can do that with these characters. these are not slouches, john goodman, laurie metcalf and sarah gilbert are characters people have come to love. i think it's possible. >> look at the year laurie metcalf has had on broadway. what's the challenge for the writers? there's going to be curiosity in the beginning to see how it works out. have to make sure it's great. >> to make it natural and what happens in the family her departure seem organic and part of the story, right, what happens with dan and the sister and the kids, those are things people will be interested in. if they're rendered cleverly and compellingly as the show has been twice now, that can be done. >> what do you think they'll do with roseanne? >> you don't think they -- what do you think they'll do with her? >> i don't know. i'm not going to pretend. i can think of funny things they

i'm so in love. i feel so good. i feel ten years younger. >> she was very happy. it bewilders me as to how i got here to where the story is changing and why now? >> reporter: the doctor is fighting the suspension of her license. she's accused of unsafe practices. what type of nurses do you have? >> i have medical assistants well trained in what we do because we do it every day. >> you don't have any nurses in your office? >> not at present. i did at one time. yes. >> one of her patients, icilma cornelius, suffered permanent brain damage after a tummy tuck. >> people really knew how i felt about her and our relationship that i think they would understand a whole lot better than what they are being fed. i wish people would open their eyes. >> reporter: in a deposition for a lawsuit filed by the family which the doctor settled boutte said she wasn't refunding the money for the surgery.

>> why haven't you refunded any of miss cornelius' money? >> well, you know, the work was done and the outcome was nothing anybody expected. >> reporter: an entirely different tone in that deposition. the attorney for the woman who says she looks ten years younger says that video was recorded before the swelling went down and afterwards, robin, she says one side of her body was higher than another. >> and the doctor is saying that patients signed a consent form for these videos but probably thought they would be used for something else. >> reporter: right, this one particular patient says that she had intended for it to be used for research, for education, for science but not for hip-hop and certainly she says not for use for marketing tools on social media, robin. >> and bad hip-hop at that. she was not -- yeah -- going to

did it by text. terry miller and andraya yearwood dominating the competition at the girls track and field championships in connecticut earlier this month. coming in first and second place respectively. and while it was a state race, their wins are making national headlines. not because of what they did, but because of who they are. two transgender girls. when was the first time either of you found any kind of opposition to you participating on the girls' team? >> i was expecting it so every day i would go home, search up track and field high school, terry miller. >> reporter: because you wanted to know what people were saying? >> yeah. >> reporter: some were harsh. critics complaining they both have an unfair advantage since they were born boys. at what point do you decide, actually, it's more appropriate for me to the be on the girls' team and competing with other girls? >> i decided that the summer before ninth grade.

>> reporter: they've both started hormone therapy. and say that for the most part, they have been welcomed by friends, family, coaches, and administrators with open arms. but there is some backlash from parents and students. two petitions were started in an attempt to change the rule of the governor -- governing body of interscholastic sports and say they are entitled to participate based on their gender identity. >> the girl athletes are at a physical disadvantage compared to the transgender female. >> reporter: bianca started one of those petitions, after her daughter lost to them. >> they have naturally testosterone in their body that has been proven to give a physical advantage in sports. >> reporter: the mom who was unaware that the girls were already undergoing hormone therapy, has font a little over 100 signatures.

medical science tells us that estrogen hormone therapy does change the body. changing some lean muscle to fat. of course everyone is different. andraya's parents say her well-being is most important. >> track is number 100 on my list of concerns. i'm talking about raising a child for life. sit fair that that child is excluded? is it fair that child doesn't feel like they have a place to belong? >> it allows her to be who she wants to be. that has a little more weight than a medal. >> reporter: the rules vary. in seven states including texas, students must play on the team that matches their birth certificate or have undergone surgery or have had extended hormone therapy. while the ncaa retires the completion of one year of testostero testosterone suppression. what do you want to say to other

transgender youth, young people, teens who are out there really struggling through this process? >> just follow your heart. don't let other people determine what you do in life. >> let's play devil's advocate for a moment and just imagine that you were both born girls. and then all of a sudden, you had two boys who identified as being girls and they said, hey, we're going to be on your team. and maybe now, you're not performing as well because they are better. >> i'm not going to discourage you or try to stay, oh, it's not fair. it would just push me to run faster. >> i would be happy for them because they get to do what they want. they're happy. so that, in turn, should make me happy. >> they're brave and different from everybody. >> reporter: just to be clear the here who started the petition said she would like to see the girls sit out for a year after hormone therapy before competing with other girls. this is, of course, sparking a

lot of debate. and something schools are dealing with. an estimated 150,000 teens identify as transgender. >> a very interesten on both sides the. >> you can see. compelling argument on both. >> we'll go over to ginger. >> all right, guys, i don't know that we have actually had a nicer morning for a party in the park. but we are doing it this morning. and my friend, izzy, if you had one bebe rexha song what would you want to hear? >> "the way i are."

and now we go to a daughter's fight for justice for her murdered mother. popular new jersey radio host april kauffman was found dead six years ago. her daughter insooising -- insisting her step father was responsible. and deborah roberts has been following it. >> i've been following it for years. a story that is really kind of worthy of a "sopranos" episode that involves a power couple, dark secrets and lies and a motorcycle gang and investigators say medical fraud. the unbelievable drama came to life when prosecutors decided to aggressively pursue a cold murder case. thursday, may 10, 2012. april kauffman is found shot to death on her bedroom floor. >> this is dr. kauffman.
